Why Do People Advise Against Traveling to Japan?

If I may say so, I think you need to find a better circle of ldquo;peoplerdquo; in your life to get advice from.

Japan is a delightful and profoundly informative place to visit as a tourist. I have the pleasure of spending time on four locations there with my family a few years ago: Kyoto, Hiroshima, Hakone, and more. Japan offers a unique blend of tradition and innovation, making it a great destination for both cultural exploration and modern discovery.

Overcrowded and Overpriced or Breathtaking and Informative?

Sour Grapes! Some people find it overcrowded, others find it overpriced, but if you're into great public transit, clean cities, and breathtaking countryside, it's a great place to work and travel! Everyone has their own perspective, and opinions run deep. In our hyper-personalized society, it's easy to think that your opinion is the only one that matters. However, not everyone's opinion should override your decision. If someone didn't like Japan, then that is their issue. You may love it.

Cultural Motivations and Personal Biases

People have their own motives for advising others not to go. These motivations can vary widely. Many western foreigners agonize and obsess over the issue of being ldquo;acceptedrdquo; in a society where they are not at the top of the social ladder. In other words, being a minority does not sit well with them. Some people might advise against traveling to Japan simply because they are jealous of others' ability to experience a different culture.

Recent Concerns and Safety Issues

There are also recent concerns and safety issues that some people might bring up. Japan has seen an increase in incidents affecting foreign tourists and expatriates. While these issues do need to be addressed, it's important not to generalize the entire country. It is true that some may appear overly polite and hospitable from the surface, but in reality, Japan is one of the most xenophobic and even slightly racist countries I have encountered. However, the intolerance and potential racism are not a threat. The crime rate in Japan is very low, which means the potential effects are minimal. Still, this can lead to a ldquo;soul-crushing disappointmentrdquo; for some travelers.

So, consider the advice you receive and think critically about the sources and motivations behind it. Travel should be about personal discovery and adventure. If you're keen on visiting Japan, research thoroughly, prepare well, and take appropriate safety measures. The experiences you'll gain are invaluable and unforgettable.
