Why Celebrities Prefer New York City Over Los Angeles

Everyone has their personal preferences. When it comes to the comparison of New York and Los Angeles, there are several factors that determine why people choose one over the other. This article explores the aspects that make New York more appealing to celebrities, as well as regular folks.

Stage vs. Screen

While both New York and Los Angeles are capital cities of entertainment in the United States, New York adds an extra element that actors find attractive: the stage. Yes, there are plays presented in LA, but those are mostly touring companies stopping in for a few weeks at a particular venue or the cast of an up-and-coming production warming up with some out-of-town performances. New York, however, has Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway. It is the actor’s realm. If you’re trying to hone your craft, there really isn’t any better place to do it than New York.

Geographical Convenience

One of the primary reasons many celebrities choose to live in New York over Los Angeles is geographical convenience. In LA, you basically are in a vehicle to go anywhere. From the Valley to the Beach, from downtown to Dodger Stadium, you frequently have to go a distance to get where you want to be, and the freeways are often jammed at any hour. If you wanted to go from NBC’s Today to CBS’ The Late Show, you could walk five blocks. That’s true for just about every aspect of anything you want within New York City.

Easy Access and Diverse Dining

In Los Angeles, you certainly have to drive to that great sushi place at the junction of the 101 and the 110. In New York, you can grab a cab, hop a subway, or even take a stroll without much trouble. Plus, there are so many interesting restaurants, watering holes, nightclubs, and other places to socialize. New York’s easy access and diverse dining options make it a boon for celebrities and everyone else alike.

Traveling and Weather

Another point to consider is the ease of travel. Los Angeles is a great hub to go to the Far East, Australia/New Zealand, and of course any western cities like San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas, or Seattle. New York, on the other hand, connects you to the East Coast, the Midwest, Europe, the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Western Asia more easily. If you are looking to travel, most places are easier to get to from New York.

Los Angeles weather is more consistent, with only a seasonal change as it gets "cooler" in the winter. New York, however, has four proper seasons, including potential snow in January. This can be a significant factor for those used to a fluctuating climate, especially those from colder regions like the central plains or New England.

Dynamic Entertainment Scene

New York's entertainment scene is much more dynamic and exciting than Los Angeles. We have two ballet companies, opera houses, and plenty of classical music venues, as well as small venues to see up-and-coming performers. There are also three separate stock exchanges, beautiful and spacious parks, and a vibrant nightlife that goes until 2 AM.

The city's "permanent drought" and expensive water are also factors to consider. New York tap water is pretty good, and it shines even more with a water filter. In contrast, water in LA can make you want to buy water just to get a drink.

The City That Never Sleeps

One of the most appealing aspects of New York is its dynamic nightlife. Nightlife in LA typically rolls up at around midnight to 1 AM, but in New York, it can go until 2 AM. There are also many places that extend their hours if you know where to go. This city truly never sleeps, making it a place of endless inspiration and opportunities.

Cost of Living

Finally, the cost of living is another factor. While LA offers more options for owning a house, the same price might only get you a two-bedroom apartment in a decent neighborhood in New York. The difference is significant in terms of car insurance, gas money, and maintenance, all of which are a part of what you have to pay in Los Angeles. New York’s public transportation system, or the option to Uber/Lyft, is mostly all you need for mobility within the city.

In conclusion, while Los Angeles has its merits, there are numerous reasons why celebrities and many others might prefer to live in New York City. From a vibrant entertainment scene to the convenience of the city, the quality of life in New York offers a unique blend that simply can't be replicated elsewhere.
