I’ve been living in Thailand ever since the lockdown, and being a Black American, I can confirm that the country is indeed non-inclusive towards individuals of darker skin tones. My stay here has been marked by moments of disappointment and frustration, often fueled by the blunt reality of racial biases. Nevertheless, this personal experience has also shed light on a broader cultural issue within Thailand, one that intersects with the global struggle for racial equality.
Thailand’s Use of the “N-word” and Its Cultural Context
For most Thais, the term “nigro,” a word I used in my narrative, simply refers to any Black person without any connotation of negativity. However, recent years have seen increasing awareness of its potential offensiveness. The use of this term truly depends on the context and situation. It’s important to recognize that the nuances of language can vary greatly from country to country, and cultural understandings of certain terms can evolve over time.
Despite the growing awareness, it’s crucial to acknowledge that many Thais remain unfamiliar with the nuances of words in English or other languages. For instance, the term “negro” in Thai slang merely means black people and does not carry an insult. This is akin to how they refer to white people as "farang" or Indians as "khaek." Language barriers inherently mean that many Thais might not fully grasp the implications of certain terms in other languages.
Thais and Racial Tolerance: A Complex Picture
It is no secret that racial discrimination is prevalent in many Asian countries, and statistical evidence supports this. Nonetheless, it is imperative to understand that Thailand, like other countries, faces its unique set of challenges in this regard. For the most part, Thais are generally friendly towards visitors and respect everyone. However, their welcoming nature has its limits. Provocation can lead to dangerous situations, and as such, it’s necessary to behave respectfully and sensitively.
Regarding my personal experience, it’s often about how the term is used. If someone uses “negro” after meeting and doesn’t understand the potential offense, it’s not necessarily a derogatory insult. Conversely, if it’s used in a hostile tone or context, it can be deeply hurtful. My suggestion is to evaluate the situation and the tone of the person’s voice. If they seem genuinely unaware of the term’s implications, it’s best to explain the situation calmly and respectfully.
