The UK Department of Transport reports approximately 1.7 billion annual rail passenger journeys, averaging 26 journeys per person each year. However, this statistic can be misleading due to the varying travel habits of individuals and the inclusion of visitors and Northern Ireland's separate rail network.

India: Where Rail Travel Offers a Lifeline for the Economically Disadvantaged

In the context of India, travel by rail is not a matter of choice but necessity for many. According to 2014 data, around 58% of India's population lived on less than 3.10 Euro per day, equivalent to approximately 6510 Rupees per month. Due to the financial burden of air travel, trains become the most viable option. For example, a short train journey from Dehradun to Delhi costs around 205 Rupees, compared to a cheap flight of 1200 Rupees, making the cost of travel by rail much more accessible.

Furthermore, the seating arrangements in Indian trains reflect the economic diversity of the passengers. While some travel in comfortable sleeper classes, the majority must make do with the general compartments, where conditions can get cramped and crowded, facilitating an uncomfortable yet cheap travel experience.
