The Ultimate Freedom: Exploring the Farthest Drives Alone
The Ultimate Freedom: Exploring the Farthest Drives Alone
Driving solo for long distances can be a unique and liberating experience. From running errands to embarking on epic journeys, solo drives offer incredible flexibility and memories. Below are some of the furthest drives alone I have undertaken, showcasing the profound freedom of traveling on my own terms.
Summer Adventures in a Small Convertible
Two summers ago, I opted to drive 750 miles from Atlanta for work on my own, despite having the option to fly. Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), often referred to as the world's busiest, was not a welcoming alternative due to its overwhelming size and past experiences with getting stranded.
The drive took 12 hours, contrasted to the standard 8 hours by air. What I valued most was the flexibility of travel and the freedom to eat whenever and wherever I desired. I even had the opportunity to participate in the Solo II race that weekend. However, rental companies are typically less accommodating for such endeavors in their vehicles. Overall, my company saved money by paying me for the expenses of driving, which included 6 tank refills, an oil change, and wear on my tires.
Cycling Adventures Across the Grand Illinois Trail
A more recent solo venture took me on a 750-mile expedition across the Grand Illinois Trail. This journey was completed in 11 days, blending camping and hotel stays. Much of this adventure was achieved on bicycle, adding an element of physical endurance and personal challenge to each ride.
Non-Stop Marathons and Transcontinental Journeys
In what can only be described as an endurance test, I reached Mississippi to New Jersey in just 24 hours without any stops for fuel alone. With a single night's rest, the journey to California clocked in at a remarkable 33 hours. These records demonstrate the potential for solo driving and the importance of proper planning and preparation.
Local and International Drives
My personal travel experiences extend beyond these interstates to include a 450-mile drive from my home to Aberdeen to visit my stepdaughter. Additionally, I have traveled extensively on my own motorcycle, exploring most corners of the UK and venturing from North of Stockholm to Northern Italy, with Magdeburg in Germany marking the furthest eastern point.
The longest trip on a motorcycle was a 620-mile journey from near Hanover to Cambridge, which included crossing under the English Channel. Another notable drive was a 3000-mile round trip from Texas to Mississippi, involving Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana, accomplished within a mere 12 days.
A Journey of Emotion and Solo Travel
After my wife passed away, I embarked on a passionate journey with my classic Porsche. Departing from London, I drove eastward, visiting places like one of the RAF bombing sites from World War II and the impressive VW museum in Wolfsburg.
I followed the country roads, preferring to explore at a leisurely pace. Driven by the need for solitude and time to process my grief, I reached Berlin, where the city's unique charm and history captivated me. Exploring the Netherlands, I visited the Louweman Museum, a hidden gem and a sanctuary for my mind.
The nearly 2000-mile journey provided a much-needed pause, allowing me to reflect and find peace. Although I have driven further since then, I have now gathered friends or taken others for part of the journey, making my annual road trips a cherished part of my life.
