This region is composed mainly of limestone, a rock formed over millennia from the accumulation and compaction of marine organisms' remains. The presence of these hills and quarries was crucial, as the Mayans lacked the technological advancements to quarry stone from below ground. The readily available stone from the hills ensured the construction of numerous and large stone buildings, including the famous Chichen Itza and Uxmal.

The low and flat landscape of the Yucatán Peninsula plays a vital role in its ecology. The porous limestone allows for the filtration and slow release of water, contributing to the unique hydrology of the region. This feature supports a diverse array of ecosystems, from coastal mangroves to tropical dry forests, all of which thrive in the unique microclimates created by the limestone bedrock.
