The Cheapest Time to Visit Okinawa Japan: Scuba Diving Bum Insights
When is the Cheapest Time to Visit Okinawa, Japan?
Throughout my university days, scuba diving was my passion. So, I'm sharing my experience on the ideal time to visit Okinawa, Japan, from the perspective of a scuba diving enthusiast.
November to February: A Quiet and Colder Season
The months from November to February are the best times to visit Okinawa. During this period, the water temperature starts to cool down, offering clear visibility for scuba divers. This season is particularly popular among tourists who are keen on experiencing the underwater world without the usual crowds. However, it's important to note that this is also the time when many local students are on summer break, and some people might be on their winter holidays, which can slightly affect the number of tourists.
November-February: Flight and Hotel Prices Remain Stable
The flight and hotel prices during November to February remain quite reasonable. There are no significant increases that match the peak tourist seasons. While there might be some small fluctuations, they are usually not drastic enough to cause major concerns for budget-conscious travelers.
Mid-August to Early September: The Typhoon Season
Another period worth considering is the mid-August to early September. This is when Okinawa and the entire island of Japan are hit by typhoons. For some, this might sound like a less than ideal time to visit, but it offers a unique experience. During this time, the number of tourists significantly reduces as many people choose to stay indoors. The locals, however, remain active, and you can enjoy a more intimate connection with the community.
Personal Experiences: A Typhoon During the Glory Days
Thirty to forty years ago, during a typhoon that hit the small island of Zamami, the village suffered massive damage. Trees were flattened, and the wind was so strong that it was difficult to stand upright. Despite the daunting conditions, the experience left an indelible impression on me. Imagine sitting by the fireplace in a local's house, enjoying a glass of awamori, the local rice spirit, listening to tales of the fisherfolk, their first sight of American soldiers, and so forth. It's a memory that I cherish to this day.
Conclusion
Based on my experiences, the best time to visit Okinawa, Japan, is from November to February, when the water is colder but prices remain stable. Additionally, experiencing Okinawa during the typhoon season can offer a unique and intimate connection with the locals and their culture. These insights might help you make the best decision for your visit to this enchanting destination.
