The Advantages of Traveling Young: A Lifelong Passion That Lasts

Traveling young can be a transformative experience that shapes your life in numerous positive ways. Whether it's a simple train journey to Toronto or an adventurous road trip to Chicago, embarking on trips during your formative years can desensitize you to change, cultivate a thirst for exploration, and foster a lifelong love for travel.

Overcoming Fears and Embracing Curiosity

For many, the fear of change and unfamiliarity is deeply rooted, often stemming from traumatic or anxious experiences. However, curiosity often triumphs over fear. Starting at a young age, travel can help you confront and overcome such fears. In my case, at the age of 10, I began traveling by train to Toronto and later by Greyhound to Chicago. By saving money and staying at youth hostels, I desensitized myself to change and the different experiences that come with travel.

Travel as a Lifestyle

The benefits of traveling young extend far beyond mere exploration. It becomes a way of life, shaping your interests, interactions, and even career choices. Whether you travel by bus or train, the adventure can be enriching. Even traveling in a simple, non-luxurious mode can be a feast for the senses. The memories, interactions, and cultural experiences gained during your youth can set the foundation for a fulfilling and adventurous life.

Planning for the Future

Traveling at a young age allows you to plan for the remaining travel in your old age. You can make strategic plans for future trips, knowing how your physical capabilities will change over time. For instance, when I was young, I planned to visit castles and ancient forts in my old age. However, I didn't anticipate the physical fatigue that would come with aging. As a result, I've only visited a few of those highlights. Despite this, I have no regrets because I enjoyed meeting people, experiencing different cultures, and savoring local cuisine.

A Lifelong Traveler

My life has been built around travel. Starting as a commercial traveler in Australia and New Zealand, my travels eventually extended to Asia. The company often covered the expenses, allowing me to explore many places that tourists might not experience. Even during my time in the Navy reserve in New Zealand, I had the opportunity to see a wide range of locations. While married, my wife sometimes joined me, and eventually, we included our children, albeit for shorter trips as they started school.

Now retired, while my enthusiasm for travel remains, the physical limitations have become more noticeable. Walking is challenging for my wife, and I'm not much better. Therefore, we have to carefully consider every trip we go on. Cruises seem to be a feasible option, as they offer a more comfortable and less physically demanding way to explore.

Recommendations for Traveling Young

While traveling as a young person can be challenging, the benefits far outweigh the difficulties. If you have no mobility issues, you can easily overcome most obstacles, such as long walks and stairs. This will give you access to a wide range of destinations and experiences.

My advice is to embrace travel while you can. The memories and enriching experiences gained during your youth will not only enrich your life but also shape your future travel plans. Regardless of your physical limitations or life stage, the passion for travel can continue to inspire and guide you.

However, it's important to adapt your travel plans as you age. Prioritize your health and physical comfort to ensure that you can fully enjoy the journey. By doing so, you can continue to explore the world and create more memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime.
