Safety for Students in New Zealand: Insights from a Former International Student

My wife and I both studied in New Zealand for four years, traversing two distinct cities, Auckland and Christchurch. Based on our experience, we believe that New Zealand is very safe for student residents, provided they use common sense and follow campus security guidelines.

Personal Experience with Personal Safety

During the course of my studies, especially since I delved into research and often moved through campus and city centers between 9pm and 5am, I was fortunate to face only one potentially dangerous situation. This incident transpired in the middle of Auckland's Central Business District (CBD) near Grafton Bridge around 2 am in the night. My research activities brought me to a site close to nightclubs in K'road, which were active on that particular day. Unsurprisingly, some intoxicated individuals were present in the vicinity. One man in particular approached me, seemingly intent on stalking me for several minutes and meters. Having managed to deal with such situations before, I politely approached him and inquired about his intentions. To my dismay, he admitted he wished to stab me and take my wallet and backpack. Fortunately, I was able to run to the police, who were patrolling Symonds Street.

New Student Induction and Safety Tips

During new students induction week, there are always programs designed to educate students on how to stay safe both on and off campus. Strictly following these guidelines can ensure a safer experience. Here's what to expect in terms of common campus safety issues:

Stabbing Rarely Happens on Campuses

Unlike some other locations, the frequency of stabbings on New Zealand's university campuses is extremely low. This can largely be attributed to the high level of security and the overall safe environment fostered by both universities and the broader community.

Murder on Campus Vicinity is Scarce

Similarly, incidents of murder on the peripheries of university campuses or in nearby areas are rare. The New Zealand police force is known for their effective community policing, which contributes to this low crime rate.

Rape Hardly Occurs on Campus

Rape is also an uncommon occurrence, but awareness is still paramount, especially for female students. It's crucial to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times, particularly in areas with heavy night life or less pedestrian traffic.

Fighting is Not Allowed and Generally Avoided

While conflict is permissible to an extent, it is not condoned and is generally avoided by the student population. Universities have strict policies against violence and academic institutions work diligently to maintain a peaceful and safe environment.

Bike Theft is a Nuisance but Manageable

Bike theft is a common issue, but it's almost always preventable with the right security measures. Always lock your bicycle with an appropriate lock, even if you're not using it temporarily. Unfortunately, two of my friends had their bikes stolen, but insurance coverage and replacement helped to offset the inconvenience.

Laptop Security is a Priority

Lastly, it's essential to protect your valuables. A stolen laptop or other equipment can be a significant setback. Be sure to secure your laptop in a safe or locker when stepping away, and use a password to protect sensitive information.

Overall, while no place is entirely free from crime, New Zealand offers a relatively safe environment for students, thanks to proactive measures taken by universities, the police force, and the community as a whole.
