Optimal Itinerary for a Tri-city French Riviera Tour: Nice, Monaco, and Cannes

When traveling to the breathtaking regions of the French Riviera, particularly including Nice, Monaco, and Cannes, it's crucial to efficiently plan your route for the best possible experience. In my experience, we found it highly effective to make Nice our main base city and take the train for day trips to Monaco and then Cannes. This approach allows you to make the most of your time and resources while ensuring a memorable holiday.

Getting Around the French Riviera

With a well-planned itinerary, the French Riviera can be easily explored with the help of frequent and reliable trains between the three main cities. The journey from Nice to Monaco takes about 20 minutes, while the trip to Cannes is just under 40 minutes. The cost of these train rides is minimal, typically just a few euros each way, with no need for pre-purchasing tickets to get an even better rate. This makes the trip cost-effective and straightforward.

Exploring the Cities

In my opinion, allocating a day each to explore both Monaco and Cannes, combined with extended stays in Nice, provides the perfect balance of cultural immersion and relaxation. While Monaco and Cannes offer distinctive charm and attractions, Nice, with its rich history and vibrant atmosphere, can be thoroughly explored over several days if you want a more comprehensive experience.

Nice: Base City and Beyond

Nice, often referred to as the gateway to the French Riviera, is best experienced through a series of longer stays rather than mere day trips. Here, you have the opportunity to explore the Old Town, walk along the Promenade des Anglais, and visit the bright and lively markets. The historic heart of Nice, with its narrow streets and local flair, is an ideal place to spend time. Additionally, a day trip to nearby Eze, with its picturesque old village and stunning coastline, is highly recommended.

Monaco: A Day of Grandeur and Pageantry

Day trips to Monaco offer a taste of the opulent lifestyle that is synonymous with the principality. The remaining residents and most tourists spend one day here, appreciating the meticulously manicured gardens, luxurious casinos, and elegant hotels. Be sure to visit the Palace of Monaco, the Grand Prix Circuit, and take a stroll along the palm-lined Avenue de la Condamine. The day trip to Monaco serves as a favorable introduction to the glamour and prestige of the city.

Cannes: From Beach to Film Festival

As you continue your journey, a visit to Cannes is a must at any time of year. The city is known as the home of the glamorous Cannes Film Festival, but it also offers numerous beaches and historical sites. Spend a day or two appreciating the palm-lined promenade, dining at the esteemed Michelin-starred restaurants, and soaking up the sun at various beaches such as La Croisette or Colette Beach. The old town of Cannes is a delightful place to explore, offering unique shops, cafes, and local markets that will entice visitors to linger.

The combination of Nice as your base city with day trips to Monaco and Cannes creates an ideal framework for enjoying the best of the French Riviera. By splitting your time this way, you ensure that each city is fully appreciated and that you leave with unforgettable memories.
