Niagara Falls: The Controversial Divide Between American and Canadian Sides
Niagara Falls: The Controversial Divide Between American and Canadian Sides
The question often arises among visitors: do Canadians visit the American side of Niagara Falls more often than the Canadian side?
Why Would We Bother?
It is widely acknowledged around the world that Horseshoe Falls is the better developed and more attractive part of the Niagara gorge.
Observations and Rumors
I have heard that the American side is the more attractive part of the falls, although I have never been there. American tourists often visit the Canadian side for the shopping experience rather than for the view of the falls. Canadian tourists, however, tend to visit more often for the shopping than for the sightseeing, which is better from the Canadian side.
Dependent on the Context
It truly depends on the context in which the question is asked.
Many Canadians do visit the American side of the falls, mostly for the shopping experience and cross-border travel. The US side has better commercial development and shopping options, especially after a series of improvements such as the Reidesel Bridge, which connects the two sides.
Post-9/11, the US requires a passport for international trips, making travel to the American side of Niagara Falls more hassle. Despite this, the American side is primarily used for shopping and not sightseeing, as the view from the Canadian side is considered better. From the Canadian side, you get a more panoramic view, which includes the famous Horseshoe Falls.
Personal Experiences
I have had the privilege of visiting Niagara Falls numerous times, both as a student in Buffalo and as a resident of Canada. My personal experience has been that the Canadian side of the falls is more enjoyable for sightseeing, whereas the American side is better for shopping.
When I visited Niagara Falls 15 times in my life, I was only on the Ontario (Canadian) side for those visits. The American side, on the other hand, was only seen when viewing across the river or from hotels on the Ontario side. Unfortunately, tourist attractions on the American side are limited, which makes the Canadian side a better choice for a full experience of the falls.
While the American side does have its charm, especially in terms of commercial activities, the Canadian side is generally considered more scenic for those who prioritize sightseeing. This doesn't mean that the American side is not a worthwhile visit, but the famous views of Horseshoe Falls and the overall atmosphere are best experienced from the Canadian side.
