Personal stories from state fairs can often be as memorable and captivating as the thrilling events they host. For Tim Walz, one of the most vivid memories from a state fair involves a stunning and tragic event during quarter-midget races at a 1951 fairground.

Tragic Memories from a State Fair

It was Labor Day 1951, and Tim was only eight years old when he and his sister were taken to watch quarter-midget races by their father. During the races, a wing walker named Kitty Middleton performed an awe-inspiring act on a Boeing Stearman plane piloted by Carl Ferris. However, this spectacle turned into a disaster when the engine failed, causing the plane to crash into a cabbage patch.

Tim’s description of the incident is heartbreaking: It exploded in a fireball, both wings flattened to the earth. 'Was that supposed to happen,' I asked my father. I knew the answer but wanted him to make things right. 'No,' he said. 'It's time to go.'

Tim’s father’s cold response left a lasting impression. Years later, the image of the wing struts crumbling remains vivid in Tim’s mind. This experience, although tragic, instilled in Tim a lifelong appreciation for the reality and the risks involved in such daring acts.

A State Fair That’s Timeless

Despite the darker memories, Tim finds joy in the annual traditions of state fairs. Specifically, the State Fair of Texas holds a special place in his heart for the annual football game between the University of Texas and the Oklahoma Sooners, which takes place at the iconic Cotton Bowl. Visiting the fairgrounds and watching the intense rivalry is a unique blend of excitement and camaraderie.

More than just the football game, the fair itself provides an unbeatable atmosphere with its vibrant colors, enjoyable food, and lively atmosphere. Each year, it provides an incredible experience that never fails to amaze Tim:

Tim’s job at the Korean egg roll stand at the Minnesota State Fair in the 1990s was a memorable challenge, marked by the monotony and physical strain of standing for hours on rough concrete floors. Despite the discomfort, the event provided a unique opportunity to interact with the fairgoers and see the behind-the-scenes workings of a state fair.

One particular experience during his break stands out. He walked into the building that housed the Princess Kay of the Milky Way butter sculptures, a familiar yet surprising sight. Tim was quickly distracted by the sight of the regional dairy princess performing her duties, noting her discomfort in high heels on the concrete floor. Her insistence on saying "Butter cookie" with a perky voice highlighted the importance of her role, and Tim’s decision not to approach her out of respect for her duties.
