Memories of Early Fairs Around the World

From the iconic music festivals to the traditional county fairs, fairs have been a significant part of many cultures. Each fair immerses visitors in a world of entertainment, competition, and communal celebrations. Here, we revisit some of the earliest fairs that left a lasting impression on those who experienced them.

Los Angeles County Fair: A Pioneering Experience in 1956

One of the most vivid memories is of the Los Angeles County Fair in 1956. This fair was so enchanting that the Seattle World’s Fair, which occurred just a few years later, could not compare. Small-town county fairs like these, where neighbors compete and showcase their achievements, hold a special place in the heart. Unfortunately, as commercialization has taken over, the essence of these fairs has changed, leaving the pure fun behind.

The Michigan State Fair: A Dead-Falling Ride and Unforgettable Memories

Recalling my childhood, the Michigan State Fair stands out. At the tender age of 12, a girlfriend's brother gave us bracelets to ride on the rides and allocated us each $20 to spend. Those were days when such an amount felt like a king's fortune! We indulged in a day of gourmand delights and thrilling rides, consuming to our heart's content until we could barely move. It took me two whole days to recover from the excesses of the day. That Michigan State Fair remains etched in my memory as a wonderful chapter from my past.

Grantham Fair: An Early Summer Thrill in 1944

Around 1944, on June 1st, my mother took me to Grantham Fair. It was a delightful experience, attended with my cousin and aunt, and we partook in fun activities such as riding donkeys, swinging on boats, and enjoying a little roundabout. The photo available captures a moment of our joyful visit, where I can be seen with straight hair, while my cousin sports curly hair. This fair was a simple and sweet slice of early childhood adventure, which I still remember fondly.

A Night of Fear at the Manila World’s Fair: The Ferris Wheel Experience

Just as my memory fades from the Great SouthEastern Fair that brought excitement to Atlanta, I vividly recall a night decades later at the 1944 Manila World’s Fair. This fair was an impressive exhibit of innovation and culture. However, the most memorable moment of the fair for me was riding the Ferris Wheel. Although the experience was scary, I faced my fears and enjoyed the ride, a testament to how fairs can be both thrilling and memorable.

The Midtown Music Festival: A Decade of Revelry

In the 1970s, I had the good fortune to attend the Midtown Music Festival. This fair was held right outside my office, and every school kid in town received free tickets. Music fairs of this nature brought communities closer, fostering an atmosphere of joy and celebration. Over the years, I missed the festival, but the memories of those special days have remained a cherished part of my life.

Reflecting on these fairs, whether they are county or world fairs, it's clear how much they contribute to our cultural heritage and personal memories. Each fair melds with our lives, creating indelible moments that contribute to the richness of our narratives.
