Memories from My Senior Year: A Journey Through High School and University
Looking back at my senior year, it was filled with both memorable moments and pivotal experiences that have shaped my life. From choosing to stay at my third high school in three years to my first serious relationship and a scholarship that changed my academic journey, my senior year was indeed a defining period.
Graduating High School and Transitions
My high school journey began in Colorado but ended up in California due to family reasons. After two weeks at my new high school, I completed my GED and took the ASVAB to become an Army recruiter. I biked to Santa Monica Beach and then was two weeks away from boot camp. Reflecting on my graduation in June of 1980, it was a significant milestone. I managed to stay at the high school I transferred to my junior year, which marked my third school change in three years. I found some nice friends and participated in a senior trip to Kansas City, Missouri, which, despite being smaller, was a big deal for suburban kids in Des Moines, Iowa.
That summer, I fell in love with Dana, my first serious girlfriend. Our relationship lasted for seven months until February 1980, when I ended it under family and friend pressure. I now wish I hadn't listened to them and given in.
The College Journey and the Scholarship
My senior year of college was equally memorable. I graduated, becoming the first in my family to attend and graduate college. This was a significant achievement for me and my family. After only three months back in California, I began a new chapter in my academic journey.
Among all the memorable experiences during my senior year, one particular moment stands out: my application for a music scholarship. I had to demonstrate my ability on various percussion instruments. While I was doing well, I had to sight-read a piece on a marimba during the interview. My high school did not have a marimba, but since I had been playing piano for years, I thought a keyboard would suffice. I played the piece and casually mentioned, 'That was fun. I’ve never played a marimba before.' To my surprise, the scholarship board gave me the scholarship on the spot. This unexpected turn of events led to a full ride through university.
Lessons Learned and Reflections
Looking back, these experiences taught me the importance of staying true to myself and not being afraid to try new things. The scholarship was a testament to my adaptability and determination. My senior year was a time of massive personal and academic growth, and I am grateful for every moment of it. What memorable things did you do in your senior year?
