Living in Seoul and Suwon: My Journey and Insights

For over 9 years, I have called South Korea my home, even though I have never lived directly in Seoul. Instead, I reside in the nearby city of Suwon, which is known for its foreign community. My relationship with Seoul began much earlier, from 1959 to 1963, during my time in the US Army at Yongsan Garrison and Namsan Hill. From 1963 to 2003, I was frequently in the Suwon-Inchon area, visiting my wife's relatives in Seoul for short periods. Since 2017, I have been back in Seoul, and it has only been a pleasure.

My Current Residence

Currently, I reside in Suwon, which is approximately 30 kilometers away from Seoul. Suwon is a city that is famous for its foreign community, making it a unique and vibrant place to live. Though I am not based in Seoul, I can't help but be drawn to it during my visits. My last visit to Seoul was approximately four years ago, and it was an incredible experience. I felt like I was on vacation, with top-notch sushi and sashimi in Paju and a delicious chirashi bowl in Itaewon.

Cultural Adventures

During my time in Suwon, I have had the opportunity to experience various aspects of Korean culture. For instance, teaching English to young and eager students has been both challenging and rewarding. I find them remarkable, with each student possessing unique characteristics that are often hidden at first glance. My life here has also granted me opportunities to indulge in delicious Mexican food, which I particularly enjoy.

Healthcare and Community Benefits

One of the most affirming aspects of living in South Korea is the healthcare system. A few months ago, my wife needed surgery, and we opted for high-frequency treatment over conventional surgery. Thankfully, we have Samsung Gap Insurance, which paid for the procedure, allowing my wife to have a private room and care provided by private nurses. This level of care came at a reasonable cost, and I was grateful for the support we received.

Lifestyle and Reflections

Reflecting on my life in Suwon and Seoul, I can't remember anything that has been bad, disturbing, or even very annoying. The healthcare system, interpersonal manners, and quality of life in general are all positively contributing factors. I appreciate the regulated and stable prices for essential goods and services, along with the convenience and lifestyle that South Korea offers. It's clear to me that I would prefer to live and die in this country, as the lifestyle and community here are truly appealing.
