Indore's Unmatched Cleanliness: A Revolution Led by Visionary Leadership

Indore, a city in the western Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, has been crowned the cleanest city in India for four consecutive years. This remarkable achievement is a testament to the visionary leadership of the local administration and the committed efforts of the city's residents. Undoing Years of Negligence

Reflecting on my 26-year residency in Indore, it's clear that a marked transformation has taken place. Initially, the city was riddled with garbage, and the people's attitude towards cleanliness was far from optimistic. Littering was rampant, and the city's streets were filled with uncollected waste, leading to unsanitary conditions and a foul smell that permeated the air.

The turning point came with the arrival of Smt Malini Laxman Singh Gaur, the first citizen and Mayor of Indore. Under her guidance, a plan was created to tackle the city's cleanliness issues effectively and efficiently.

Implementing Visionary Cleanup Strategies

Removing Garbage Bins

One of the first steps was the removal of all garbage bins from the city. The rationale behind this was to eliminate the temptation for people to litter. This decision was bold but necessary. The local administration devised a system to ensure that garbage could still be collected from each door, ensuring no part of the city was left unattended.

Garbage Collection and Segregation

A fleet of Tata Ace garbage collection vehicles equipped with loudspeakers was introduced. These loudspeakers played songs dedicated to cleanliness, recorded by popular artists Sonu Nigam and Kailash Kher. The high volume ensured that every resident was aware of the garbage collection schedule. Segregation of waste into dry, wet, plastic, electronic, and bio-disposable categories was done at the collection points, and further refined in sub-transfer stations.

For commercial areas, where waste production was higher, dedicated garbage collection vans made three daily visits. Green and blue garbage bins were installed on each road, with green bins for biodegradable waste and blue for non-biodegradable waste. The addition of a third bin for medical waste during the COVID-19 period further enhanced the system.

Enhancing Infrastructure and Public Awareness

Public Toilets and Waste Management Facilities

Public toilets were installed at every 1 km interval, ensuring accessibility for all. These toilets were specially designed to be inclusive, catering to people with disabilities as well as men and women. Additionally, the Sabji Mandi (fruit and vegetable market) was equipped with a methane generation plant, turning organic waste into methane gas, which was then used to power public buses.

Community Participation and Public Awareness

Awareness programs were organized, leading to thousands of households converting biodegradable kitchen waste to garden compost. Public participation in waste management was further boosted, making Indore a model of community-driven cleanliness.

The shift from polythene bags to more sustainable alternatives was achieved through a combination of awareness campaigns and strict enforcement. This marked a significant change in the city's eco-friendliness.
