Hurricanes in Orlando: A Historic Overview and Walt Disney World's Response

Orlando, Florida, like many areas of the southeastern United States, is no stranger to hurricanes. This article explores the history of hurricanes affecting the area, focusing on notable storms, their impact on Walt Disney World, and the measures taken for recovery and reopening.

The Impact of Hurricane Milton

Just last night, October 9-10, 2024, Hurricane Milton swept through Orlando, Florida. This latest hurricane has highlighted the vulnerability of the area to such severe weather events. Orlando has experienced a series of hurricanes over the years, and this brings to mind the events of 2004, when four hurricanes hit the region in as many weeks.

Since hurricanes were named in 1962, Orlando has been subjected to 18 named storms. In these cases, Walt Disney World, one of the most iconic attractions in the area, has had to close as a safety precaution. Once the immediate threat passes, Disney's dedicated staff work tirelessly to clear debris and make necessary repairs, aiming to reopen within three days to minimize financial losses.

Historical Context: Charley and Irma

A brief look at Orlando's hurricane history reveals that Charley and Irma were two of the most significant storms to hit the area. These hurricanes demonstrated that even inland regions can experience substantial damage from hurricanes.

While a hurricane weakening as it moves inland by about 100 miles significantly reduces its intensity, it still brings wind and flooding. For instance, Hurricane Ian in 2022 started as a Category 4 storm near Fort Myers, Florida, and by the time it reached the central part of the state, it had weakened to a Category 1 storm. Despite this, Ian brought significant rainfall and strong winds that caused damage, including downed trees and power lines, leading to power outages for many residents. The storm surge typically remains more pronounced closer to the coast.

Walt Disney World and Hurricane Preparedness

While hurricanes can cause severe disruptions, Disney World has a well-established protocol for dealing with such events. In response to the threat from Hurricane Ian, the resort did indeed shut down for two full days to ensure the safety of its employees and guests. As of September 30, 2022, Walt Disney World is gradually reopening with specific operating hours for its theme parks starting from October 1 and 2.

As of the writing of this article, the following are the planned hours of operation for Walt Disney World:

October 1: Magic Kingdom opens at 10:00 AM and closes at 6:00 PM. October 2: EPCOT opens at 11:00 AM, Hollywood Studios at 12:00 PM, and Animal Kingdom opens at 1:00 PM.

Disney is also offering early entry for resort guests, with starting times of 7:30 AM in Animal Kingdom, 8:00 AM for EPCOT, and 8:30 AM for Magic Kingdom.

Achieving normal operating hours over the October 1/2 weekend is expected, but individual outdoor attractions may remain closed for extended periods as Disney continues to make additional repairs and clean up.

This shutdown is by no means the first such hurricane hit. In fact, it marks the eighth time Walt Disney World has had to close due to a hurricane. Other hurricanes that have led to closures include Dorian in 2019, Irma in 2017, Matthew in 2016, and three in 2004—Jeanne, Frances, and Charley (partial closure)—and Floyd in 1999.

In conclusion, while hurricanes can be devastating, the preparations and recovery efforts by both the regional authorities and Walt Disney World showcase the resilience and adaptability of both the community and the iconic entertainment destination.
