Exploring the USA: My Journey to 44 States
Exploring the USA: My Journey to 44 States
Have you ever dreamt of traveling to all 50 states within the United States? While it may sound like a daunting task, it is quite achievable with a little planning and determination. In my case, I have been to 44 out of the 50 states, and I am eager to visit the remaining six.
My Criteria for Visits
Unlike some individuals who count even brief flyovers as a visit, my criteria is more stringent. I only count a state as visited if I have spent an overnight stay within its borders. This means that I would not include Minnesota or the Dakotas as states I’ve visited, despite crossing them during a layover at the airport in Minneapolis. However, for those who count flyovers, such as flying over Nebraska and Kansas, these states could certainly be considered visited.
Long-Distance Travel Abroad the States
One of the highlights of my travels was a drive from my duty station in San Diego to my parents' house in New York. While this trip didn't cover every state in the US, it allowed me to make significant stops and experience the diversity of the country. Whether it's a scenic drive through the Midwest or a cross-country journey, each state offers its own unique journey and experiences.
Teenage Adventures
In my teenage years, I had the privilege of visiting many states during various bus trips, which filled my early travels. One particularly memorable experience was a 30-day Amtrak railpass trip in 2014, during which I managed to visit and revisit 38 states. This extended journey exposed me to an incredible range of landscapes, cultures, and cities, making it one of the most enriching experiences of my life.
Feasibility of Visiting Multiple States
If you are considering a similar adventure, it is entirely feasible to visit a significant number of states within a reasonable time frame. For instance, with an Amtrak 14-day railpass, you can visit over 30 states in just 10 days. This type of travel is not only achievable but also highly rewarding, offering a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the diverse culture, history, and natural beauty of the United States.
The States I Have Yet to Visit
The states I have not yet visited are Alaska, Hawaii, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Michigan, and West Virginia. While they are undoubtedly beautiful, they remain on my list because I am passionate about visiting every corner of the nation. However, I hope to check each of these off my list in the near future as I continue to explore the United States.
Conclusion
Embarking on a journey to visit all 50 states is an ambitious goal, but it is achievable with careful planning and a passion for exploration. Each state offers something unique, whether it's vibrant cities, stunning natural landscapes, or rich historical significance. So, if you are looking for an adventure, consider making a plan to see as many states as you can. Your travels will be filled with unforgettable experiences and memories that last a lifetime.
