Exploring the Gems of Australia's Coast: My Beach Journeys

As a young migrant, Australia has been my home, and its coastline has been my playground. Over the years, I've visited countless beaches from the North Shore to the southernmost points, some of which stand out as not just memorable but also pivotal in shaping my life and adventures.

North Shore Beaches: A Growing Passion for Surfing

Starting from Palm Beach and heading east to Shelly Beach, every beach on the North Shore is part of my childhood memories. The North Shore, indeed, is where the board surfing craze began in the early 1960s. My first board was a 11ft 6in balsa board, weighing close to 30 kilograms. It took quite a push to get that thing moving, but it opened the doors to a world of wave riding experiences.

One of the interesting facts is that North Narrabeen has made its way into a Beach Boys song, adding a unique cultural layer to these coastal villages. Growing up at North Narrabeen, I was part of the early surfing pioneers in the area. The small-town charm and the waves that shaped my youth are forever etched in my heart.

Eastern Coast Highlights: Clovelly and Bondi

While the North Shore is rich with memories of my youth, the eastern coast offers its share of enjoyment. Clovelly, in particular, holds a special place in my heart for the serenity and tranquility it offers. Unlike Bondi, which caters more to tourists, Clovelly retains its local charm and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Of course, Bondi is a must-visit, especially for the tourists. It's a symbol of Sydney, known for its long sandy beach, vibrant culture, and the iconic Bondi Pier. It's a perfect spot for those looking to experience the full essence of Sydney's coastal life.

South Coast Adventures: From Sydney to Eden

My adventures aren't confined to a single coast. I've surfed down the southern beaches from Sydney to Eden, and even ventured north from Sydney to Greenmount. In between these travels, there are too many good beaches to name. However, Valla Beach stands out in my memory. Whenever I took a drive from Sydney to Brisbane, it was a stop where we paused for a swim and a break, creating lasting memories.

Victorian Delights: Port Phillip Bay

In Victoria, the highlights are in the Port Phillip Bay area. Brighton and Queenscliff are both excellent for a swim, offering a mix of natural beauty and recreational facilities. The tranquil waters of Port Phillip Bay provide a perfect escape from the bustling city life.

Australian Beaches Beyond Sydney: South Australia and Western Australia

South Australia, despite having a few poorly wave-conditioned beaches, still offers unique experiences. However, the Western Australian south coast is a different story. Here, you'll find some of the best pure white sandy beaches in the world, including Margaret River. Not only are the beaches attractive, but the region also offers amazing scuba diving and fishing opportunities.

Perth, the capital, primarily serves as a swimming spot for those who prefer the safety of a man-made pool. Surfing is less common due to the more sheltered nature of the coastline, but there are still a few spots where surfer enthusiasts can enjoy the waves.

Experiences Beyond the Beaches

My journeys weren't just about the beaches. After serving in the army in 1971, I transitioned to spearfishing and scuba diving. After a divorce, I embarked on the great circle, traveling extensively across Australia. Although I only managed to cover a portion before meeting my current wife, this experience was invaluable in connecting me with the land and people.

Ultimately, my beach journeys are more than just visits; they are a part of my identity, a canvas painted with unforgettable moments that shape who I am today. Whether I'm pushing my balsa board in the early morning sun, swimming in the cool waters of Victoria, or diving into the crystal-clear depths of Western Australia, each moment adds to the tapestry of my Australian journey.
