Exploring Detroit: A Unique Experience for Both First-Timers and Long-Timers

As a Canadian living near the Windsor-Detroit border, my initial visit to Detroit was both fascinating and eye-opening. Despite its reputation, this city has much to offer, especially for first-time visitors or those re-discovering it after years.

My First Visit to Detroit

Recently, I made a 2-hour drive from my current home in London to visit Detroit for the first time. It took approximately 3 hours due to heavy traffic at the International Bridge. I decided to explore the downtown area, where safety is generally better, before diving into other neighborhoods.

After getting out of my car, I headed to Mom's Spaghetti, a restaurant associated with the famous rapper Eminem. The food was satisfying, and I then went to the Little Caesar's Arena for a Pistons game. It was particularly exciting as I was there for the first NBA game in the United States and I saw fellow Canadians wearing Toronto Raptors jerseys. The atmosphere was electric, and I was glad to save money on a hotel by driving back home the same night.

I have spent 6 years calling Detroit my home, and I thoroughly enjoy living here. There are numerous activities to enjoy, including visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts, exploring scenic Bell Isle, and enjoying various entertainment options in different neighborhoods. Techno and House music lovers can find great venues like TV Lounge, Magic Stick, and Marble Bar. For something more upscale, try Highlands, Shewolf, Grey Ghost, Besa Townhouse, or Barda.

A Side Visit to a Grappling Tournament

A few years ago, I joined a group of friends for a grappling tournament in Detroit, which took place on a Friday night. We gathered in a heavy-duty van and stopped at a 'Red Roof Inn,' a hotel known for its poor quality. During our stay, we witnessed a police officer stopping a man in a convenience store parking lot, which made for an interesting experience. Later, the man’s car was taken away by the police, further adding to the eventful evening.

It was not a quiet night in the hotel as various vehicles arrived, and we heard at least two instances of police involvement, one concerning a potential overdose. My roommate and I eventually settled in but found the environment distracting and uncomfortable. We left early the following morning to catch a fight in Dearborn and then returned home.

While the hotel stay was memorable, it emphasized why the city is sometimes perceived as less safe. However, my personal experience in the downtown area did not make me feel unsafe, and the city is full of friendly people ready to welcome visitors.

Detroit, a city that has seen better days, still offers a wealth of attractions for both first-time visitors and those who have called it home for many years. Visitors can experience its history, culture, and vibrant nightlife, while those who call it home find a city rich in community and potential. It's a destination that continues to evolve and, despite its challenges, remains an intriguing and fascinating metropolis.
