Embarking on a Personal Spiritual Retreat: A Journey Within
Where Would You Travel for a Personal Spiritual Retreat?
Inward. Self investigation. Self inquiry. Sitting quietly and traveling inward until there is no where except everywhere.
That is, unless you are questioning where you can take the body you are currently identifying as yourself and desire the egoistic spiritual tourism and a chance to pretend to be “spiritual” with like-minded “others”.
If you scoffed at this answer or felt it too harsh or haughty, I highly recommend the most amazing personal spiritual retreat, where true inner exploration awaits.
To GMCKS Arhatic Yoga Ashram in Pune, India.
Mostly, I go where the teachers are. I usually prefer some amount of structure, including a daily schedule and teaching/training guidance. Someday, I would like to do a 10-day Vipassana retreat where they are free or very inexpensive, and they have many centers around the world. For your own retreat, consider a quiet, natural setting, either secluded in nature or in a resort/hotel where people are not intrusive.
I have been fortunate enough to attend retreats in various locations, including Colorado, Thailand, Washington D.C., the Catskill Mountains, and the South Island of New Zealand, a place I find both beautiful and deeply spiritual. Summer is the preferred season for me, as it offers a peaceful and rejuvenating environment.
Nowhere too far!!!
Going to India, where the Buddha lived and taught in places like Bodh Gaya, might seem nonsensical as it has become a “spiritual tourist” centre. However, the South Island of New Zealand, especially during the summer, offers a spiritually enriching environment filled with natural beauty and solitude.
