In my extensive years of living in both capitals, I have often found myself contrasting the unique qualities of London with the captivating aspects of Paris. When it comes to maintaining a clean and orderly environment, London holds a clear advantage. Unlike Paris, where one might find litter and less frequent cleaning, especially in certain areas, London's streets are significantly cleaner and better maintained. In many parts of the city, the public spaces are pristine, making for a much more pleasant and inviting atmosphere.

Market Vibes and Homelessness: A Philosophical Divide

Persistent urban myths aside, I believe London’s sprawling nature and its larger central area do offer a greater variety of activities and sights. However, this opinion is largely based on my 30 years of living in London and my never having spent a significant period in Paris. The cultural and social atmosphere in both cities has shaped my preferences, which are rooted more in personal experience than objective facts.

On a basic level, London offers a more inclusive environment. Being a foreigner in London is largely accepted, and despite the occasional jokes, the city's diverse population is celebrated. In Paris, however, if you're not from the outlying areas, you may be perceived as not fitting in, which can be a stark contrast to the more welcoming atmosphere in London.

During my four years living in Paris in the 1970s and early 1980s, and my seven years in London between 1975 and 1991, I developed a deep appreciation for both cities. My preference for London stemmed from its cleaner streets, more accepting attitude, and the diverse and inclusive environment.
