Is Christian Nationalism a Cult or a Misinterpretation?

Christian Nationalism, as it is currently portrayed, often does indeed seem to deviate from the fundamental principles of Christianity as taught in the Bible. It appears that these individuals have co-opted God's moral authority to persecute others, contradicting Christ's injunction to judge not lest ye be judged. Additionally, the second command given by Christ was to love one's neighbor as oneself, a principle that, unfortunately, is not always evident in the hatred espoused by Christian Nationalists.

Segregation and Misunderstanding

The idea that Christians should live among "heathens" is a deeply flawed interpretation of scripture. The Bible teaches love and acceptance, not segregation. The concept of "living among heathens" is more about mission work and conversion, not exclusion. This separation is often seen as a form of secular separatism, where groups believe they can live apart from society. However, this is at odds with Christ's teachings and the Christian principle of universality.

Secret Societies and Propaganda

Statements about secret societies claiming to be Christians, such as Freemasons, suggest a level of suspicion and misunderstanding. These secret societies often have their own symbols and teachings, which can be interpreted in various ways. For instance, the symbolism on the American Medical Association (AMA) logo, with a serpent coiling around a staff, can be seen as representing the healing arts. However, when interpreted through the lens of Christian Nationalism, it can be seen as a sinister emblem of "enlightenment." This is a misinterpretation that suggests divine possession and control, which is far from biblical teachings.

Misuse of Biblical References

The Book of Enoch, a non-canonical text, references fallen angels and demonic possession. Christian Nationalists often attribute modern technological advancements and science to these fallen angels and demons. This misattribution is inappropriate and unsupported by mainstream Christian belief. Authors like Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking are not seen as having been influenced by demonic entities, but rather as individuals contributing to human knowledge and understanding.

True Christian Principles

Christianity traditionally emphasizes the universality of its message. Jesus was not a nationalist; neither was he a Jewish nationalist. This is why his message was rejected by many of his contemporaries who were looking for a political Messiah. Moreover, Jesus was critical of the materially wealthy and advocated for poverty as a spiritual ideal. The apostles shared their property, and the early Church held poverty in high regard.

The Importance of Church-State Separation

Modern Christian Nationalism often conflates religion with politics, which can lead to corruption and the misinterpretation of Scripture. The separation of church and state is essential to preserve the integrity of both. Churches are not good at elevating the moral behavior of states, and states are not suitable guardians of religion. This separation can help prevent the politicization of religious beliefs, ensuring that religion remains a source of personal faith rather than a tool for political power.
