India's journey towards educational excellence has been characterized by significant growth, innovation, and aspiration. However, the increasing number of seats and the proliferation of Institutes of Technology (IITs) have inadvertently brought about a series of challenges to the quality of engineering education. This article aims to address these concerns and highlight the pressing need for improvements in the system.

Increasing Number of Seats: A Double-Edged Sword

The surge in the number of seats for programs across India has undoubtedly increased accessibility to higher education. However, this prolific growth has also led to a decline in the quality of education. The expansion has been fueled by the government's push for higher educational intake and the promise of employment opportunities, which has attracted a large number of students to the engineering field. Unfortunately, with more institutions coming in, the standard of instruction and student-to-faculty ratio have not improved proportionately, leading to a race for degrees over the pursuit of innovative learning.

The Role of IITs: A Shifting Tide

The establishment of more Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India has indeed brought about more educational opportunities, but it has also raised concerns about a decline in the quality of education at these prestigious institutions. The increasing number of IITs has led to a fierce competition among them, resulting in a shift towards voluminous teaching and less emphasis on practical and innovative projects. This trend is evident in the curriculum, which has become overly focused on theoretical knowledge rather than hands-on learning and research.

Mark-Based Studies: The New Reality

One of the most concerning trends in Indian engineering education is the focus on marks-based studies to the detriment of practical and innovative learning. Many students now find themselves in a race to secure high grades, with the end goal being simply the acquisition of a degree. This mindset is detrimental to the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for future engineers. The emphasis on marks-based studies has created a system where rote learning is preferred over creative and innovative thinking, stifling the potential for groundbreaking research and development in the engineering community.

Looking Forward

It is crucial to address these issues and ensure that the engineering education system in India is not only accessible but also of the highest quality. Policies need to be implemented to improve the faculty-to-student ratio, enhance the curriculum to include more hands-on projects and research, and promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. Additionally, close monitoring of educational standards across all institutions is necessary to ensure that everyone is held to the same high standards.
