Beyond Copacabana: Exploring Rio's Best Alternative Beaches
Copacabana, the quintessential beach destination, can sometimes be overrun with tourists and locals alike. If you're looking for a more alternative and local experience, Rio de Janeiro has a range of delightful alternatives to offer. This article explores some of the best beaches to visit when the iconic Copacabana is a bit too crowded.
Praia de Ipanema
When Copacabana's crowds become too overwhelming, the neighboring Ipanema beach becomes the retreat for the fashionably alternative carioca youth. The beaches around Ipanema are divided into different zones, known as postos. These postos not only mark distinct areas of the beach but also define its nightlife and atmosphere.
Posto 8 serves as a family-friendly zone, where families can play in the pools that form at low tide. Postos 8 to 9 are a hub for LGBTQ revelers, marked by the rainbow flags that denote the barracas. These are the vibrant tented spots where visitors can rent deckchairs, parasols, and even enjoy massages. Posto 9, once the cool local hotspot in the 1980s, has recently shifted to the area around Coqueiro, the famous big palm tree, where students and young professionals mingle with bronzed bodies.

Praia do Arpoador
Standing atop Arpoador rocks with hundreds of people clapping and watching the sun set into the ocean can be a magical experience. However, the vibrant atmosphere and annual collective celebrations make this beach feel like a unique event. For beginner surfers, the conditions can be challenging, and locals may not be open to tutorials. Despite the potential discomfort, the sunset activities at Arpoador offer the best evening vibes on the beach when the sea swell is high. During low swell periods, swimming is safer and more enjoyable at Arpoador, allowing access to Ipanema.

Praia Vermelha
Dramatic and Jurassic in its own right, Praia Vermelha offers an entirely different feel compared to the more touristy shores of Copacabana and Ipanema. Perched on the rock formations, fishermen can be seen, with Sugarloaf Mountain towering above them. The waters can be unpredictable, but most of the time, it's safe to swim. The brown sugar-like sand adds a unique texture to the experience. A hike along the Claudio Coutinho trail at the foot of Sugarloaf completes the adventurous experience.
Getting there: Bus 512 to Urca, or a taxi from Copacabana for around R$15/£3
Praia do Leme
Beyond Ipanema, the coastal town of Leme offers a compact but lively beach experience. The wide sandy stretches are perfect for various activities, from slacklining between palm trees to volleyball, and bodyboarding as well. At sunset, enjoy live music and caipirinhas at the rock formations at the eastern end of the beach. On nights with a full moon, the view from Leme is nothing short of magical.
Getting there: Metro Cardeal Arcoverde and connecting bus 590
Whether you're seeking a family-friendly environment, a vibrant LGBTQ scene, or a unique naturally formed landscape, Rio de Janeiro's alternative beaches offer diverse experiences for all. From Ipanema's diverse postos to Arpoador's vibrant sunset parties, Vermelha's dramatic views, and Leme's lively rock-hopping activities, there's something for everyone beyond Copacabana.
