A Special Diwali: Celebrating Traditions and Gratitude

This Diwali was indeed a special one for me. Filled with gratitude and thanks to the blessings received, I felt a deep sense of contentment. Despite lacking any gifts or bonuses from my workplace, I felt remarkably happy and satisfied. My heart was filled with joy as I made a conscientious effort to give gifts to those who touched my life this year.

Across the southern regions of India, we celebrate various festivals, except during times of family death or national calamity. This year, amidst these circumstances, Diwali was a unique experience for us. For the first time, it brought us back to our beautiful home, a place where we could finally express our gratitude and joy through decorations. After spending over a decade in rented homes with strict landlord restrictions, this was a welcome change.

The anticipation leading up to the festival was palpable. My sister, always the stalwart sharer of our joy, managed to decorate the balcony despite her busy schedule. This was our first Diwali in our own home, and we felt a profound sense of pride as we adorned it with love and care. Diwali, to us, is more than just lights and decorations; it is a celebration of the festival of lights and Rangoli.

The Traditional Early Morning Gathering:

The morning of Diwali typically starts early, with all family members awake and dressed in their traditional attire. We begin by worshipping the God in our small household temple. Not being believers in idol worship, my husband and I have chosen a path that introduces our children to different faiths and allows them to make their own decisions as they grow. This feast of diversity is something that I believe is essential for their future.

Following the prayers, a Rangoli is drawn, and sweets are placed around it. It is a delightful moment as friends and family gather to celebrate, especially our younger daughter. The joy she felt, all dressed up in her finest, was priceless. The subsequent lighting of diyas and play of games marked the heartwarming night, filled with laughter and cherished memories.

A Night of Light and Celebration:

As the evening descends, the joy of Diwali truly takes center stage. The fireflies of Diwali diyas add a magical touch to the night. Rangolis, intricately crafted, decorate the flooring, symbolizing the beauty and joy found in life. The night is filled with the sounds of happiness, laughter, and the exchange of sweets, all of which create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The celebration was extra special this year for both my family and me. Our efforts to bring our traditional customs into our home and to share these experiences with our extended family and friends have been profoundly fulfilling. Diwali, as a festival of lights, not only lights up our homes with its golden glow but also fills our hearts with joy and happiness.

Conclusion:

Dear readers, whether you celebrate Diwali or not, may you find joy in the celebration of life, family, and gratitude. May this special Diwali bring you the warmth and light that it did for us.
