The annual ball drop at Times Square has been a cherished tradition for many. Reflecting on my own experiences, it has been a unique and memorable event that I will always treasure. My first time was in 1979, and it significantly shaped my understanding of community celebrations and new beginnings.

My First Encounter in 1979

That New Year's Eve, I was 17, and with two friends, we ventured to Times Square. We had a front-row seat as we counted down the seconds from 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. A spontaneous event occurred when, as we shouted "Happy New Year," a young woman kissed me on the lips. Caught off guard, I was both shocked and thrilled simultaneously. This unexpected moment became a cherished memory, a testament to the unpredictable yet exciting nature of New Year's Eve.

Experiences Over the Decades

Over the years, I returned to Times Square on several occasions, each with distinct memories. One notable experience was around 15 years ago, when the weather was unusually warm. Regardless of the later time, I arrived around 6 PM and was still able to witness the ball drop from a further distance. The atmosphere of the event was vibrant and enchanting despite the larger crowd. But as the years went by, the experience diminished with new changes to the square.

The Evolving Atmosphere of Times Square

The changes in Times Square were dramatic. Once the entertainment was second to none, offering a magical atmosphere with friendly and jovial crowds. Sadly, it became more akin to a Disneyland-like experience, with the ball drop being overproduced and commercialized. This led to increased traffic and policing, with streets closed, and crowds managed in pen-like structures. This transformation made the experience much less personal, as it was now overrun by tourists and millennials.

Final Thoughts

After the ball drop became a more commercial spectacle, it lost its charm for many longtime New York residents. The crowds and artificial production made the experience less enjoyable. However, for those looking for a unique and memorable event, Times Square remains a must-see. Just be sure to check the weather and go earlier for a better experience.

Despite the changes, the ball drop remains an iconic event. For those who have seen it, the experience is unforgettable. For those who haven't, it's definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should be on your bucket list.
